Abstract
A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE PARENTAL PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AND QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG CHILDREN WITH CANCER AT SELECTED HOSPITAL IN CHENNAI

Cancer in children is a small fraction of the global cancer burden. Parents of children with cancer suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress due to adverse effects of treatment and fear of death of their children. And these factors affect the level of basic satisfaction in children in various aspects such as physically, psychologically and socially. This study aimed to assess the parental psychological distress and quality of life among children with cancer. The samples were children between the age group of 8-17years. Convenience sampling was used. The tools that were used was Impact on event scale-revised version (22-items) and Kid screen quality of life questionnaire (52-items).It was found that both the fathers and mothers experienced moderate to severe levels of psychological distress which in turn lowers the child’s quality of life.
