Abstract
POSSIBLE ROLE FOR ALPHA- FETOPROTEIN IN TOXOPLASMA GONDII INFECTION AMONG ABORTED IRAQI WOMEN

Toxoplasmosis is one of the causative agents for women abortion and congenital deformity outcome. Alphafetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein elevated in some carcinoma cases. This study is a trial to evaluate alpha-feto protein (AFP) in toxoplasmosis & screening test for a subsequence development of abnormalities. Ninety six blood samples for 16- 46 years old aborted Iraqi 17 women with Toxoplasmosis included in this study. The results of investigation was compared with those for 79 apparently healthy volunteer with no previous abortion states. The current results showed that highest percentage of toxoplasmosis among rural women 66(64.4%) than urban 30(31.2). with 36(37.5%) between (15-25) years, 28(29.2%) between (26-35) years and 32(33.3%) between (36-46) years old, according to Chi-Square (P<0.05). In other hand the distribution of Toxoplasma gondii according residency that there it is highly significant effect compared to the healthy control (P<0.05). The study reveals that there is a highly significant elevation in IgM 67(69.8%),IgG 79(82.1%) and Alphafetoprotein 72(75%) positivity in sera of infected aborted women in comparison to healthy control (P=0.032). Finally it could be concluded that α-fetoprotein may play a role in congenital abnormalities and abortion during toxoplasmosis.
