Abstract

Obesity is fast increasing globally, increasing the risk for several chronic diseases; consequently, the aim of this study was to assess the association of obesity with the high level of serum uric acid, as an indicator for chronic diseases. Data regarding obesity were collected as a part of an awareness campaign included 2093 volunteers. The overall prevalence of obesity amongst study subjects was 81.3%. The prevalence of males was 75% and females were 85.8%. Increased weight categories were strongly linked to female and this was found to be statistically (P = 0.000). High serum uric acid values were demonstrated among 227 (7.75%) subjects, of whom 185(81.5%) were males and 42 (18.5%) were females. Level of serum uric acid is relatively elevated with elevation of BMI and it is more evident among male, rather than females.
