Abstract

The study was done to bring into appreciation the accommodational amplitude variations induced by fresh palm wine (Elaeis guinensis) when consumed in large quantities. Forty five (45) healthy adult volunteers (Igbo men) aged between eighteen (18) and thirty (30) years were used for the study. Each was made to consume sixty five (65) centilitres of the fresh palm wine harvested in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State (Eastern Heartland). The effect of the product on the amplitude of accommodation was then determined after initial tests and measurements were done in the Optometry clinic of Imo State University. The results showed that the amplitude of accommodation changed by 10.7% (reduction) some 20 to 30 minutes after consumption of the fresh palm wine. It further changed by 6.0% (reduction) after forty (40) minutes and finally returned to 0.0% (normal value) after 50 to 60 minutes. The effect of the fresh palm wine on the amplitude of accommodation was however, observed to have a relationship with the dose consumed.
