Abstract

Tissue expander is a technique to create expansion of local tissue by using silicon implants for correction of large defects created due to excision of large tumors, electric burn over scalp, treatment of male patterns of baldness, breast reconstruction and many other conditions with excellent aesthetic & cosmetic outcome. A young adult patient aged 28 years with a high voltage electric burn injury of scalp was subjected to the placement of a tissue expander inside local hair bearing area of healthy tissue after excision of unhealthy tissue. The huge fronto-parietal defect with absence of outer calvarium was subjected to placement of a tissue expander, inside the healthy area of scalp to achieve the required flap dimension. Excision of unhealthy tissue over the defect with exposed inner skull bone was done and defect was covered with the flap created through tissue expander. The use of tissue expander yielded adequate flap coverage and also excellent aesthetic result at the end of the 3 months over large defect of scalp without outer calvarium.
