Abstract

Psoriasis is one of chronic inflammatory skin diseases that might be mediated by a distinct type of T helper lymphocytes, named as TH 17 cells that play a central role in the pathogenesis of Psoriasis. Objective: This study aimed to determine the levels of IL-17A and IL-23 levels in psoriasis patients. Serum levels of IL-17A and IL-23 were measured in 50 psoriatic patients and 40 healthy control with age range (4- 60) years old attending the dermatology out-patient clinic in the Hospital of Imam AL-Hussein Medical City in Karbala Province-Iraq during the period from January 2013- October 2013using. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used to measure the cytokines concentrations. There was a significant (P < 0.05) increasing in the level of IL-17A in psoriasis patients as compared to control. Whereas, there was no significant (P> 0.05) difference in the level of IL-23 between patients and control group. The present study indicates that IL-17A might play a key role in the immunopathogenesis of psoriasis and as markers for disease activity.
