Abstract

A descriptive study was conducted to identify screening behaviours, knowledge and beliefs regarding breast cancer among college women in South India. The study was conducted among 150 subjects selected who met the eligibility criteria by using non probability convenience sampling technique. The data were collected using standardized questionnaire developed by Kendra Guilford on screening behaviours, knowledge and beliefs on breast cancer. The study results showed that 61% of the subjects did not know about breast self examination (BSE) as well as 59.3% had poor knowledge on breast cancer followed by 38% had average knowledge and 3% had good knowledge. Level of knowledge on breast cancer of subjects was significantly associated with area of residence (P<0.05) and prior information received on breast cancer (P=0.05)
