Abstract

AIMS & OBJECTIVES: The aims and objectives of Study to evaluate the patients presenting with Solitary nodule of thyroid in relation to the age, sex distribution of solitary nodules of thyroid, to study the patterns presentations and etiology of solitary thyroid nodule to detect percentage of malignancy in solitary thyroid nodule, to study the various modes of treatment and the complications following surgery. MATERIAL & METHODS: The case material of the present study consists of hundred and ten patients with solitary thyroid nodules admitted to the surgical wards of Mallareddy institute of medical sciences from 2012 November to 2015 march. Our study included both male and female patients above the age group of 12 years and clinically found solitary thyroid nodules were included in this study. A detailed history and a thorough physical examination were carried out. Apart from routine biochemical investigations, other investigations like X-ray neck, FNAC, indirect laryngoscope, thyroid profile tests were done in all patients. All the details of surgery and post-operative complications were noted. RESULTS: The percentage of solitary thyroid nodules in surgical admissions is 2.31%, whereas the Percentage of solitary thyroid nodule to total thyroid swellings is 21.53%.The peak incidence was noticed in 20 to 49 years of age group, which constituted 72% of cases. 85 patients (77.27%) were females and the rest were males. Hemithyroidectomy was the commonest surgery, done for 95(86.36%) cases and total thyroidectomy was done in 6(5.45%) cases. Postoperatively transient ipsilateral vocal cord paralysis occurred in one patient.
