Abstract

Teen childbearing is commonly viewed as an irrational behavior that leads to long-term socioeconomic disadvantage for mothers and their children. It has been described as a cause of persistent and intergenerational poverty. However, this paper highlights the socio-economic status of women who have their first child as a teenager in Osun State, Nigeria. In application of statistical analysis using Percentage distribution and G-Statistic analysis, it was discovered that women who have their first birth as a teenager have poor socio-economic status in the society. It was also discovered that most of these women dropped out of school immediately after their first birth and consequently, leads to low occupational status; thereby, leaving these women to struggle with poverty.
