Abstract

Bacterial strains were isolated from electroplating industrial effluents containing KCN they were identified as strains of Pseudomonas putida. They were analyzed for their ability to use of potassium cyanide (KCN) as a source of nitrogen and also their ability to use the same as the sole source of carbon, analyzing in the minimal media. Intriguing results emerged when KCN was used a sole source of nitrogen in the presence of monosaccharides, disaccharides and oligosaccharides, being provided as the sole source of carbon. When the reverse was analyzed such that KCN was used as a source of carbon, apparent rudimentary facts emerged. Eventually, a concentration formula for bioremediation of KCN in the electroplating industrial effluents was articulated with permutations and combinations of carbon substrates which arrived at a low cost treatment scheme for effluents containing KCN in industrial release. The study was aimed at creating a solution from the problem source by isolation of the inhabitant bacteria from these effluents, identifying them thereby enhancing the efficiency formulation for biodegradation hence making available for cost effective large scale treatment of effluents from these industries through such innovation.
