Abstract

Distal end radius fracture is one of the most common fractures encountered by Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeons. Displaced intraarticular fracture needs accurate reduction with stabilization to prevent secondary osteoarthritis. We evaluated the functional results of these fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation by volar plates. Patients with displaced intraarticular distal radius fracture from January 2013 to October 2014 were included in the study. Fracture Type 23 B3, 23 C1, 23 C2 and 23 C3 were included in the study. Ipsilateral forearm injuries, compound fractures and patients who presented after two weeks were excluded from the study. Standard volar approach is used and stabilized with volar plate. Patients were regularly followed up at 2, 6, 12, 26 and 52 weeks and assessed for functional results and complication. Functional results were assessed by Mayo wrist score and Quick DASH score. Total 24 Patients were analysed. Mean age of the study group was 48 years. Male to female ratio was3:1. 12.5% (3)were type 23 B1, 37.5% (9) were type 23 B3, 25%(6) were type 23 C1,16.7%(4) were type 23 C2 and 8.3%(2) were of type 23 C3 as per AO Classification. Average dorsiflexion was 60.20, palmar flexion550, supination 780, pronation 810and grip strength was 76.45% at the end of one year. Three patients got implant removed by one year due to extensor tendon irritation. Average Quick DASH score was 30.27% and Mayo wrist score was 73.54%. Open reduction and Volar plating gives good results in indicated displaced distal intraarticular fractures of the radius.
