Abstract

Renal transplant recipients are known to be susceptible to viral infections, with more severe clinical presentations compared to healthy persons. Although symptoms of infection caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) in healthy adult are generally mild, the virus is known to produce severe symptoms most often in renal transplant recipients. This study aimed to determine the ofIgM and IgG of cytomegalovirus (CMV) among the renal transplant recipients from March to May 2015 at Sudanese Kindney Transplants association Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan. 90 renal transplant recipient were enrolled in this study, blood specimens were collected , serum was separted, Enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) was used to investigate anti-CMV IgG and IgM antibodies. Out the total of 90 renal transplant recipients, 76 (84.4%), 0 (0.0%) were positive for IgG&IgM respectively. The results showed highest (40.0% for IgG) among 41- 60 years age group. CMV serofrequency was insignificantly associated with age(P=0.983), gender(P=0.405), duration of hemodialysis(P=0.145), duration since transplantation(P=0.62) and past history of blood transfusion(P=0.343). the prevalence of current CMV Virus (0% IgM) but high past exposure to CMV (84.4% IgG). As serofrequency of CMV is high in studied population, screening for CMV in such immunesuppressed population is very necessary
