Abstract

Trochanteric fractures are commonest fracture in elderly population. This study was done to evaluate functional results of Dynamic Hip Screw Fixation in stable and minimally unstable trochanter fractures. This was prospective study of 50 cases of trochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures of patients above the age 60 yeas admitted between October 2012 to May 2014. Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) classification type 31-A1.1, 31-A1.2, 31-A1.3, 31-A2.1 and 31-A2.2 were included in the study. OTA type 31-A2.3 and all OTA type 31-A-31,3A-32,and 3A-33were excluded from the study. Other exclusion criteria were poly trauma, ipsilateral associated limb injuries, and old malunion in same limb, patients presented two weeks after injuries and pathological fractures. In our series of 50 cases there were 34 females and 16 males, ranging from 60 to 92 years, most of the patients were between 60 to 70 yrs. Mean age of 66.8 yrs. 88% of cases were admitted due to low energy trauma and with predominance of right side. Out of 50 cases, 14 were31-A1.1, 16 were 31-A1.2, 03were 31-A1.3,12 were 31-A2.1 and 5 were 31-A2.2 .Mean duration of hospital stay was 12.3 days and mean time of radiological union was 15.4 wks. Excellent results were seen in 80% cases, good in 16% cases, fair in 4% in intertrochanteric fractures. Dynamic Hip Screw Fixation is simple and time tested procedure which gives excellent to good results in stable and minimally unstable trochanteric fractures in geriatric patients.
