Abstract

Oral cancer is the most common cancer and constitutes a major health problem in developing countries, representing the leading cause of death. This carcinoma accounts for almost 40% of all the cancers in the Indian subcontinent. To study the incidence of different grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma in all age groups and sex with the help of histopathological examination and their expression of p53 and ki67 antigen and its correlation along with grading. One hundred twenty (n=120) consecutive oral biopsies of oral malignant lesions were examined with the help of Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining was done. Amongst the 120 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma the mean age was 55.54±12.16 years. Maximum number of patients were in the age range of 51-60 years (29.1%). 53.3% gave the history of smoking,29% were consuming alcohol with smoking,11% were gave the history of consuming pan masala and gutkha,9% were indulged in tobacco chewing and 7% were smoking tobacco as well as taking pan gutkha. Pattern of expression, labelling index and intensity of the stain of p53 and ki67 were studied separately according to their grading and its correlation between labelling index (LI) and intensity of stain (IS) were done. The incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma remains high due to the popularity of pan, tobacco chewing, smoking and alcohol addiction in this region. Combination of p53 and Ki-67 over expressions can be used as a specific marker for oral lesions that are probably at high risk for malignant transformation. The evaluations of markers expression p53 and Ki67 has a prognostic value allowing the identification of aggressive forms, highly proliferative by oral carcinomas.
