Abstract

Advances in the understanding of the molecular and genetic mechanisms of Breast cancer have lead to realization of the heterogeneity of the disease and the promise of a new era of individualized management for patients with Breast Cancer. The advent and use of high- throughput molecular methods for the study of Breast Cancer have brought to the forefront the existence of the so- called Basal-like breast cancers, which have been shown to have distinct biologic and clinical characteristics. To evaluate the expression of CK5/6 by immunohistochemistry in malignant Breast tumour and to correlate with ER and PR expression.A total of 34 masectomy specimen with or without axillary lymph node, received in section of histopathology department of Silchar medical college & hospital within study period from june2016-may2017, proved as a case Breast carcinoma ,were included in study and expression of ER, PR, and CK5/6 were detected by IHC. Amongst the 34 cases of breast carcinoma, there were 10 cases (29.4%) which were positive for CK5/6 expression and remaining 24cases(70.6%) did not show any expression of ck5/6.The expression of CK5/6 showed significant correlation with ER Negativity and PR Negativity.CK5/6 expression in Breast Carcinoma implies a 'basal like' molecular phenotype form a distinct category of Breast Carcinoma cases from therapeutic and prognostic point of view. Breast cancer with basal phenotype expression is prognostically unfavourable subset as a significant proportion of these cases were of high grade Breast carcinomas and is negative for Estrogen and Progesterone receptor expression. Therefore, we can conclude that analysis of basal phenotype expression of Breast Carcinoma may be helpful for better estimation of individual survival and selection of group of patient with risk of recurrence.
