Abstract

The present study was conducted in six major cut flower markets in Karnataka during the year 2010-11. Primary data was collected and analysed to assess the infrastructure availability and to document the Infrastructure Inadequacies for Marketing of cut flowers in major markets namely International Flower Auction Centre (IFAC), KR Market Bangalore, Mysore, Tumkur, Belgaum and Hubli of Karnataka. A total sample of 410 respondents comprising farmers, Wholesalers, retailers and consumers were selected randomly. To examine the adequacy of existing marketing facilities, 14 major attributes were identified which constitute for an ideal market. The IFAC secured a score of 72 (out of 140) which represents an average score with moderate facilities existing, followed by 42 in Belgaum, 36 in Tumkur, 33 in Hubli, 25 in K R Market and least in Mysore market with 24 score. The above scores represent the situation of infrastructural facilities in the State, the results says that majority of the markets have no infrastructure or either it has very little infrastructure. Except for Bangalore and Belgaum markets, in no other market, market supervision is done leading to lack of control on traders leading to exploitation of farmers in terms of higher commission rates. Electronic price display boards are not installed in any of the markets except for IFAC. Similarly cooling and storage facilities are available only in IFAC, Bangalore. Lack of cooling and storage facilities leads to distress sale and increase in post harvest losses incurred by farmers in the market and decreasing the export competitiveness of cut flowers from India.
