Abstract

The antileishmanial properties of a derivative of isolated compound PITC-2 isolated from tissue cultured plant Pluchea indica traditionally used medicine in various regions of India was evaluated for antileishmanial property. The PITC- 2 compound was subjected to ozonolysis followed by addition of trietanolamine to get the final product2,2’-(thiophene-2,5- diyl bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene))dimalononitrile. The results of ethyl acetate insoluble part showed maximum Antileishmanial activity with IC<20µg/ml,followed by PITC-2 compound and its derivative. The experimental drug and its derivative have no cytotoxic effects as observed so far. The final compound was then subjected to in vitro experimental set up keeping amphotericin B and Pentostam as standard drugs.
