Abstract
ASSESSING CHALLENGES IN EMERGENCY ACUTE POST OPERATIVE PAIN MANAGEMENT

Numerous guidelines address the important subject of postoperative pain control. The American Society of Anesthesiology guidelines, updated in 2012, were created to facilitate safe and effective pain management in the perioperative setting, reduce adverse outcomes, maintain patient’s function and well-being, and enhance the patient’s quality of life in the perioperative period. A crucial first step in postoperative pain control according to the guidelines is regular, consistent pain assessment. Postoperative pain can delay discharge, may cause an unexpected hospital admission, and it can create pain, stress, and anxiety for patients and their family, possibly interfering with rehabilitation. And analyse and report on the steps that can be taken further to overcome the challenges in managing pain. The study was designed to be a cross sectional study which included both patients and health care professionals to know the exact locations were the challenges are faced for managing pain. Study was carried out with the support of nursing staff and the health care professionals and other care takers of the surgical ward. Various challenges like improper dose/ quality of drug, unauthoroized drug use, omission of drug by the patient, prescribing error from the HCP side, drug administration related error, use of high dose or also known as extra dose resulting in misuse of medicine, wrong time of administration, administering drug to wrong patient by the health care team, use of wrong dosage from like using liquid formulations in young adults, use of solid dosage forms in geriatrics and pediatric population which may lead to pharmacological errors by pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic actions. Wrong route of administration of drug, use of expired or deteriorated products.
