Alcohol abuse is one of the major public-health problems in both developed and developing countries. About 62.5 million were alcohol abusers in India, amongst 17% were dependent users. Anxiety and lack of self-awareness are prominent symptoms of patients with alcohol dependence. Aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of bibliotherapy on anxiety and self-awareness among the patients with alcohol dependence admitted in de-addiction centre. The research design adopted for this study was quasi experimental pretest and posttest design. The tools used for the study were Zung’s anxiety selfassessment scale and self-awareness assessment scale. Bibliotherapy was given to patients in the study group for a period of eight days and posttest was conducted. The study result showed that the mean value of anxiety in the study group decreased from 46.67 to 37.93 (p<0.001) and in the control group. The mean level of self-awareness in the study group increased from 32.70 to 47.93 (p<0.001) and in the control group there was no significant change in the mean scores of anxiety and selfawareness. Also there was a significant difference in the posttest mean scores of anxiety and self-awareness between the study and control group patients at p<0.000 level. So bibliotherapy was found to be effective in reducing the level of anxiety and improving the level of self-awareness among the patients with alcohol dependence.
