Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors of incisional hernias. The incisional hernia is a protrusion of intestinal contents through the weak point of previously operated scar. The study is carried-out to determine the risk factors such as sex, obesity, history of previous wound infections, type of incisions and number of previous operations in the cases of incisional hernias. 50 patients with incisional hernia in surgical wards of Teaching Hospital are included in the study period from May, 2013 to March, 2015. The various risk factors in cases of incisional hernias are studied. The risk factors included are sex, obesity, wound infection and previous surgeries. The common age group in the study is 30 to 40 years of age. The females are predominantly involved (84%), 52% cases had history of wound infection. The incidence of incisional herinia is more common in the lower midline incisions (68.2%). All the patients were subjected to surgery and mesh repair was under taken in all the cases. None of our cases had recurrence during our follow-up.
