Abstract

This study investigated the potential of combined leaves extracts of Gongronema latifolium (GL) and Ocimum gratissimum (OG) against nephrotoxicity and hepatotocxicity induced by CCl4 in rats. Forty albino rats were divided into 8 groups with 5 rats in each. Groups A and E respectively received normal feed and 0.12ml/kg b.w CCl4 (intraperitoneally), B, C and D respectively received 200mg/kg b.w GL and OG and 100mg/kg b.w. each of combined GLOG. F, G and H (CCl4- induced groups) respectively received 200mg/kg b.w. GL and OG and 100mg/kg b.w. each of combined GLOG. After 7 days of treatment, animals were sacrificed and serum collected for glucose, urea, BUN, uric acid, creatinine, K+, Cl, Na+, AST, ALT and ALP analyses. The results unveiled treatment groups exhibiting significant (p<0.05) decrease in liver enzymes and kidney functions (except Cl- and Na+ which increased significantly) when compared to CCl4 group alone. The normal and CCl4 rats treated with GLOG showed significant (p<0.05) changes compared to single extract treated animals. The combined GLOG tends to be more effective than single extracts in the treatment of CCl4-induced nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in rats.
