To determine coagulation abnormalities in patients with CLD in a tertiary care centre, Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Assam (India) for a period of one year (July 2013 to June 2014). Patients who were diagnosed as having CLD with clinical, biochemical, radiological or FNAC/histopathological findings were subjected to various coagulation studies for Platelet count, PT, APTT, TT and Plasma fibrinogen level. Total 80 no. of cases were studied during this period. Out of these 80 cases, thrombocytopenia found in 61 (76.25%) no. of cases. Amongst various coagulation parameters studied, raised PT was found in 62 (77.5%), raised APTT in 54 (67.5%) and raised TT in 67 (83.75%) no. of cases. In the study of plasma fibrinogen level, it was found that in 59 (73.75%) cases it is within normal range. In 19(23.75%) cases it was below normal range and increased in 2(2.5%) no. of cases. Abnormalities in coagulation profile are profound in CLD patients. A rebalanced hemostasis is maintained as both prothrombotic and antithrombotic systems are affected. However, with the prolongation of coagulation parameters we can predict the functional derangement of liver and these tests can be used as useful prognostic marker.
