Abstract

Introduction: Pain is one of the major clinical complains given by the patients in both in-patient and out-patient departments. When compared to other surgical pains, orthopedic surgery pain is more serious as reported by patients in various studies. Thus, medicines like anesthetics, NSAID’s and other analgesics are very frequency prescribed in orthopedics department of all the health care hospitals. In developing countries due to lack of guidelines for the physicians irrational use of analgesics is reported. Irrational use of analgesics in India are reported with use of more than required dose, more than required dosage, and unnecessary prescription leading to duplication of therapy. Materials and Methods: Case reports of the patients are the main tool for the analysis of the study. Approval was taken from the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) for carrying out the study for a period of 6 months in the departments of orthopedics. Study was done from Sep 2017 to Feb 2018 in RVS Hospitals, which is a 300 bedded hospital in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Results and Discussion: 482 patients were enrolled into the study and the individual case reports were collected from the nursing stations of orthopedics department. All the medicines prescribed per patient were individually recorded and incorporated into software of statistical tool and analyzed for results. All the data revealed in respect to NSAIDS prescribed to the patients are reported in the Table 1.Conclusion:Conclusion can be described that parenteral use of NSAIDS was observed to be limited in use in the patients, representing that unnecessary use of parenteral doses is not allowed in the hospital settings were the study was carried out. Adherence to medication by the patients was found to be 88.9% of overall population.
