Abstract

Introduction: Significant morbidity has been associated with use of anesthetics in recent years in spite of low mortality. This shows that aesthetics risk is one of the important public health care issue which should be overtaken to know the cause and steps to be followed to overcome them. It is seen from few studies that deviation from the accepted practice, error in management are reasons found behind the critical incidents of anesthesia at a substantial portion which can be simply expressed as human errors. Materials and Methods: Over 5 months period of time all the critical incidents occurring in a tertiary health care hospital by name MAPIMS were collected and analysed for the type of critical incident, frequency of critical incident and severity of incident that happened by use of anesthetics have been studied. The study was carried after getting approval from the Institutional Review Board. Results and Discussion: During the 5 months period of study in MAPIMS, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu,, India, about 88 cases of critical incidents have been noted. Study was especially carried out in surgical departments of both male and female of the hospital. As shown in TABLE 1, about 23 cases of critical incidents were in general surgery, 10 were of gynecology and obstetrics, 6 are pediatrics surgery, neurosurgery were with 2 cases of critical incidents, otorhiolarygology with 7, orthopedic surgery resulted in 20 cases of critical incidents. Conclusion: From the present study we conclude that, despite of various measures taken to overcome the critical incidents out of anesthetics use mortality and morbidity were associated with aesthetics regardless of improvements made in the formulation ad packing of medicines. Steps should be taken that use of checklist, use of protocols, can improve awareness and safety on critical incidents of aesthetics..
