Abstract

Introduction: Laboratory form reports are the basic tools for further therapeutic approach aid for any clinical professional in any department. Any illegible or incorrect report of laboratory form often results in inappropriate clinical diagnosis followed by improper therapeutic approach resulting in resource wastage and life-threatening conditions. It was reported in a study that about 43% of the laboratory forms were found lacking with complete patient and clinical data. This laboratory data incompletion often results in pre-analytical errors. Aims and Objectives: To collect and analyse all the laboratory data forms from a tertiary health care hospital for their appropriateness and to check if any missing of laboratory data are found. By this evaluation the quality of laboratory data can be increased thereby resulting in effective management of patients. Materials and Methods: All the process of the study and well designed protocol of the study was submitted to Institutional Ethics Committee for approval prior to the startup of study. After getting approval from the committee the study was carried out for about 2 months in Katuri Medical College & Hospital, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Results and Discussion: The study in Katuri Hospitals included about 823 patient’s laboratory data forms. All the forms were observed for various data that are important in clinical decisions which included patient’s name, Patient’s gender, Patient’s age, Location/ward of patient, Working diagnosis, Nature of clinical sample collected, Investigation required, Name of the attending physician, Time of collection of sample have been observed and noted with number of forms missing with any of the above data. Conclusion: From the study conducted in Katuri Medical College & Hospital, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India, it was observed that all most all the data are recorded appropriately in the laboratory data forms of the hospital, but, efforts are to be made to improve the data collection on parameters like time of sample collection from the patient and type of sample collected as these two play major role for deciding the next type of sample to be analysed and the further investigation requirement of the patient in future
