Studies of the efficacy of gabapentin and tranzodone for treating alcohol use disorder (AUD) have yielded mixed findings. Alcohol-dependent outpatients with persisting were treated with either gabapentin or trazodone. Patients were assessed at baseline and after 24 weeks on medication using the Ham-D Scaling Factors. Of 60 cases initially treated, 10% dropped out due to morning drowsiness. Of the remaining 54 cases, 35 were treated with gabapentin (mean dose ± SD = 888 ± 900 mg) at bedtime and 19 were treated with trazodone (105 ± 50 mg) at bedtime. Both groups improved significantly on the Ham-D, however, the gabapentin group improved significantly more than the trazodone group. Controlled studies are warranted to replicate these findings.
