Abstract

While some ultrasound and CT evaluations have been published, there is no standard procedure at our institution or many others. A recent ultrasound examination of 36 patients ranging in age from 2 to 62 years old prior to attempted abscess drainage revealed a sensitivity and specificity of 96 percent and 82 percent, respectively. The positive predictive value was 92%, and the negative predictive value was 90%. These are encouraging findings, but the study's applicability to pediatric neck abscesses is limited due to the wide age range of the participants. In order to encourage judicious and individualized use of ultrasound and CT in the diagnosis of children with lateral neck abscesses, this research compares the accuracy of ultrasound and CT to the gold standard outcome of attempted drainage. These children will benefit from a diagnostic procedure that encourages the judicious and individualised use of ultrasound and CT in the diagnosis of neck abscesses. In certain cases, an ultrasound may be favoured as the first line imaging technique to save money, pain, and possible harm to the foetus.
