Abstract

Background: Mandibular fractures comprise most of the traumatic injuries, which are treated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The facial area is one of the most commonly fractured site of the body, of which mandible is the most frequent. Material and method: 120 patients were selected for this retrospective study who had received treatment for mandibular fractures. Demographic details, radiographic and the clinical data were obtained from hospital records. Patients were divided into 3 different age groups, Group 1: age between 18-28, Group 2: age between 29-39 and Group 3: age between 40-50. All the data was collected and recorded in the Microsoft excel sheets. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. Results: Out of 120 studied cases 77 were males and 43 were females. 44.16% of patients belonged to the younger age group of 18- 28 years. Age group 2 and 3 had 36.66% and 19.16% cases respectively. This study observed that dentoalveolar fractures were most common (n=41) accounting for 34.16% of all the cases. There was also a high incidence of parasymphysial fractures with 27 cases. Ramus and symphysis fractures had lowest incidence with 6.67% and 7.5% respectively. Males reported with majority of fracture cases. Similarly maximum fracture cases were observed in the young age group of 18-28 years and least in the age group of more than 40 years. Conclusion: Dentoalveolar and parasymphysis were the most common mandibular fractures and the incidence of these fractures was highest amongst young males.
