Although the mortality rate continues to decrease with better understanding of pathophysiology improvements in diagnostic
techniques and surgical management, most of these are limited to the major hospitals with better health care facilities. This
study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital during the period of 2012 August to 2014 August among a total of fifty
patients diagnosed as acute intestinal obstruction. Diagnosis is done pre-operatively as Acute Intestinal Obstruction with the
guidance of clinical and radiological and biochemical parameters. Small bowel obstruction was the common cause of
obstruction with 72% of the cases compared to 28% due to large bowel obstruction. Males were affected more with nearly
twice the number of patients compared to females (M : F = 1.94 : 1). Small bowel obstruction was the common cause in both
males and females. Small bowel obstruction was seen more in young (32%) and middle aged (26%) people, compared to
large bowel obstruction with 8% and 8% respectively. whereas nearly equal frequency was seen in people who were more
than 60 yrs old 14% and 12% in small and large bowel obstruction respectively.
<Email> gorityalaln@yahoo.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>5</volume><issue>6</issue><year>2015</year><keyword>Intestinal obstruction,Mortality rate,Tertiary care hospital</keyword><AUTHORS>G.
