About 62.5
million were alcohol abusers in India, amongst 17% were dependent users. Anxiety and lack of self-awareness are prominent
symptoms of patients with alcohol dependence. Aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of bibliotherapy on anxiety
and self-awareness among the patients with alcohol dependence admitted in de-addiction centre. The research design adopted
for this study was quasi experimental pretest and posttest design. The tools used for the study were Zung’s anxiety selfassessment scale and self-awareness assessment scale. Bibliotherapy was given to patients in the study group for a period of
eight days and posttest was conducted. The study result showed that the mean value of anxiety in the study group decreased
from 46.67 to 37.93 (p<0.001) and in the control group. The mean level of self-awareness in the study group increased from
32.70 to 47.93 (p<0.001) and in the control group there was no significant change in the mean scores of anxiety and selfawareness. Also there was a significant difference in the posttest mean scores of anxiety and self-awareness between the
study and control group patients at p<0.000 level. So bibliotherapy was found to be effective in reducing the level of anxiety
and improving the level of self-awareness among the patients with alcohol dependence.
<Email> nkimdad@yahoo.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>5</volume><issue>7</issue><year>2015</year><keyword>Bibliotherapy,Anxiety,Self-awareness,Patient with alcohol dependence</keyword><AUTHORS>Imdadullah NK,Sujatha V,Santhi S</AUTHORS><afflication>Student M.Sc (N), Faculty of Nursing, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.,Reader, M.Sc (N), Faculty of Nursing, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.,Professor, M.Sc (N), Ph.D, Faculty of Nursing, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.</afflication></Article></Articles>
